8. Self-regulation Flashcards
What is self regulation? (Self-regulation Social)
Controlling your own thoughts, feelings and behaviour in order to achieve your goals
In academia, what is self regulation more important than? (Self-regulation Social)
IQ
What is Mischel (1970) procedures of the marshmallow effect? (Self-regulation Social)
- Child placed in front of marshmallow
- If they do not eat it over the 15 minute period, they can have 2
What did Mischel (1970) find in the marshmallow effect? (Self-regulation Social)
- 1/3 could wait the full 15 minutes
- Those who could not wait, had worse academic achievements/social outcomes
What did DeRiddler (2012) find? (Self-regulation Social)
Meta analysis showed high self control predicted success across all measures of behaviour
What is the process of the model of action phases? (Self-regulation Social)
- Pre-decisional phase
- (Decision intention)
- Pre-actional phase
- (Action initiation)
- Actional phase
- (Action outcomes)
- Post actional phase
What is the pre-decisional phase? (Self-regulation Social)
- Making faulty decisions about future emotions can lead to failures
- May lead to picking a goal that doesn’t make us happy
What is the pre-actional phase? (Self-regulation Social)
Underestimating how long things take
What fallacy directly links to the pre-actional phase? (Self-regulation Social)
Planning fallacy (you are able to complete a project in x amount of time, even though you know it has taken others longer)
What evidence did Buehler (1994) find in relation to the pre-actional phase? (Self-regulation Social)
- Asked P’s to estimate the most optimistic/most pessimistic time on how long their major projects would take
- The actual time was longer than the most pessimistic estimates
What is the actional phase? (Self-regulation Social)
People with the best self control can still give in to temptation
What did Baumeister (2007) believe in relation to the actional phase? (Self-regulation Social)
Self regulation is like a muscle, there is a limit to how much we can use at once and when it is used, it becomes stronger
What is the strength/limited resources model? (Self-regulation Social)
When an individual exerts self control, the resource depletes, leaving fewer resources available for self control later
How is the strength/limited resources model measured and what are the procedures? (Self-regulation Social)
- Dual task paradigm
- P’s told they would be eating cookies
- Half did eat cookies, others ate radishes (requiring self control)
- All P’s then had to complete an impossible task
- Those in the cookie condition attempted the task for 13 minutes, while the others attempted for 8
- Known as ego depletion
What did Mischel believe? (Self-regulation Social)
Self-regulation requires skills but these skills can be taught
