8. Obedience: Milgram's Research AO1 Flashcards
What participants did Milgram use?
40 male participants aged 20-50 in jobs ranging from unskilled to professional
How did Milgram find his participants?
Newspaper ads and postal flyers saying ‘looking for participants for memory study’
What did Milgram offer to participants?
$4.50 for turning up
Who played the teacher?
A true participant not a confederate like the learner
Briefly outline Milgram’s study
- experimenter wore lab coat
- participants could leave at any time
- ‘learner’ strapped in chair in another room
- teacher gave increasing shocks when they made a mistake on task
- not told they were fake shocks or actors
What were the levels of shocks used by Milgram?
- started at 15V
- rose through 30 levels to 450V
What happened at 300V and again at 315V?
Learner pounded on wall and gave mo response to next question
What happened when the teacher turned to experimenter for help?
Gave a standard instruction ‘absence of response to be treated as wrong answer’
What 4 ‘prods’ did the experimenter use on the teacher
- Please continue
- Experiment requires you to continue
- Its essential for you to continue
- You have no other choice, you must go on
What were Milgram’s findings
- No participants stopped below 300V
- Five stopped at 300V
- 65% continued to 450V
What did observations indicate
- Participants showed signs of extreme tension
- Many were sweating, trembling & digging fingernails into hands
- Three had full blown uncontrollable seizures.
What did Milgram do prior to study
Asked 14 psychology students to predict the naive participants behaviour
What did the 14 psychology student Milgram asked for a prediction suggest may happen? What can be concluded from this?
- Estimated no more than 3% would continue to 450V
- Therefore findings were unexpected
What did Milgram do at the end of his study?
- Debrief participants
- Assure their behaviour was normal
- Conducted a follow up questionnaire
What were the findings of Milgram’s follow up questionnaire
- 84% reported they fell glad to have participated
- 74% said they’d learnt something of personal importance
