18. Minority Influence AO1 Flashcards
What is minority influence
A minority changes the opinions of others through internalisation
What does minority influence lead to
Internalisation - both public behaviour and private believes are changed
What are the three processes used for minority influences
- Consistency
- Commitment
- Flexibility
Briefly outline consistency
Makes others rethink their own views
What are the two types of consistency
- Synchronic consistency
- Diachronic consistency
What is synchronic consistency
People in the minority are saying the same thing
What is diachronic consistency
They’ve been saying the same thing for some time
Briefly outline commitment
Activities must create some risk to the minority to demonstrate commitment to cause - helps gain attention through extreme activities
What else occurs at the commitment stage, explain?
Augmentation principle - majority pay even more attention - e.g. Wow he must really believe what he’s saying I should consider his view
Briefly outline flexiblity
Researchers argued being consisten and repeating same arguments/behaviours is seen as rigid and off putting - minority should adapt their point of view - accept reasonable counter arguments
Briefly explain the snowball effect
Over time, more people become converted - more it happens the faster the rate of conversion - social change occurs when minority becomes majority
What did Moscovici study?
Group of 6 people viewed set of 36 blue-green coloured slides - varied in intensity - stated whether slides were blue or green
How many conditions did the study have?
3
What were the three conditions in Moscovici’s study?
- Confederates consistently said green
- Confederated were inconsistent about colour
- A control group - no confederates
What were Moscovici’s findings in the consistency minority condition?
Participants gave same wrong answer on about 8% of trails - 32% gave same answer on at least one trial
