8. Friction Flashcards
1
Q
Friction
A
A force that acts in an opposite direction to the motion of an object.
2
Q
What causes friction between two solids?
A
- Type of material (μ aka., coefficient of friction)
- Mass (Technically it is the Normal Force—FN—because it is the surface’s reaction to mass affected by gravity.)
3
Q
Two types of sliding friction.
A
- Kinetic Friction
- Static Friction
4
Q
Kinetic Friction
A
- Attempts to stop or slow moving objects.
- If we apply a force equal and opposite to the Fkfr the object will continue moving with no acceleration (constant velocity).
5
Q
Static Friction
A
- Must be overcome to start motion.
- This force is reactive. It has a maximum value before motion can begin but will not always exert that value.
6
Q
Equation of kinetic friction
A
7
Q
Equation of static friction
A
8
Q
Friction affects the acceleration of an object. How?
A
9
Q
We describe friction when falling through air as…
A
Air resistance
