24. Basics of Electricity Flashcards
What is the symbol for a current?
I
What does I means in electicity?
I is the symbol for a current in the basics of electricity
What is a current?
A current is the amount of charge that flows over time. A current is measured in amperes and it is symbolized as A, therefore, A is the SI unit of current.
How can you calculate current?
You can calculate current by using I=q/time.
For current to flow you need two things… what are those two things?
- Power source
- A loop from + to -
What is the symbol for voltage?
V
In the subject of basic electricity, what does V stands for?
Voltage
What is voltage?
Voltage is the quantitative expression of the potential difference in charge between two points in an electrical field.
What is the difference between a current and a voltage?
Imagining a waterfall, current is the amount of charge (water) that flows overtime; on the other hand, voltage is the potential difference in charge (water) between two points in an electrical field (distance from where the water falls downwards to the ground). Think of it almost like gravity. The higher gravity is the harder you hit the ground.
What is the difference of resistivity and resistance?
As a charge moves through a conductor it encounters barriers (like the mass of an atom) which slows the flow of the current. (it’s like friction for electricity). Resistance is the resistivity multiplied to length of an object divided the area of an object (which is πr2). Resistivity is a component of resistance.
What is the difference of the resistivity (p) within metals, semiconductors, and superconductors?
not yet edited.
What is the equation for resistance?
R=pL/A
What is Ohms Law?
When a potential difference (voltage) is applied across the ends of most metal conductor the current proportional to the applied voltage. Thus, V=IR.
What is an electrical power?
As current moves through a circuit, the electric energy can be transformed into other forms of energy.
The rate at which electrical energy is transformed to other forms is power.
Explain the P=IV is the substitute Ohm’s Law in (V=IR) and you get two forms of “P.” What are those?
P = I2R and P = V2/R
