what is a Hazardous materials (HAZMATS)?
Any item or agents which have the potential to cause harm to humans, animals or the environment either by itself or interaction with other factors
What are the responsibilities of the Brigade when dealing with Hazmats?
To control any spillage or release of HAZMATS to mitigate harm to the public and the environment
What are the 4 catagories of HAZMAT?
- Chemical
- Physical (Hot/Cold)
- Radioactive
- Biological
How can Hazmats become hazardous to Personnel?
- The inhalation
- The ingestion .
- Chemical or heat/cold burns.
- Absorption of toxic substances through the skin.
- Absorption across mucous membranes e.g. mouth and eyes.
- Injection.
How should a Hazmat incident be approached?
From Upwind and Uphill
Can GTS be worn in a fire situation?
No
What is the minimum cordon distance at a HAZMAT incident?
25m depending on the Hazard
What 5 things should be considered when formulating a message from a Hazmat incident?
- Confirmation of type of incident and the level where appropriate (See Appendix 1).
- CHEMDATA in use, detailing the HAZMATS information retrieved.
- Proposed emergency action code (EAC) and decontamination method.
- Specific operational procedures implemented.
- Tactical mode.
At an incident where a Hazmat has been involved in fire, what is the correct level of PPE when carrying out life saving actions?
Full PPE and BA
What are the 7 Hazard Zones at a Hazmat incident?
- Hot Zone - (inner cordon)The contaminated Area
- Warm Zone -(inner) The area outside the hot zone that is not initially contaminated
- Cold Zone -(between inner and Outer) uncontaminated area where key command operations will take place
- Inner Cordon - Area where potentially Hazardous activity may be conducted
- Outer Cordon - The controlled area that should not be entered by unauthorised personnel. Monitored by the Police
- Hazard Zone - Area of risk (both warm and hot zones)
- Decon Zone - initially set up in the outer cordon, encompassed by the inner cordon once decon commences
What must an IC consider when conducting their initial Risk Assessment at a Hazmat incident?
- Life risk.
- Threat to the environment.
- If the intervention of the LFB is appropriate.
- HAZMAT involved.
- Safe system of work and PPE.
- Resources required.
- Specialist advice required.
What are the levels and attendances of Hazmat incidents?
Level 1 - Single appliance - to deal with an incident of limited risk (Fuel Spill, Gas leak, small mercury spill)
Level 2 - 2 Pumps, FRU, HMEPO, CU and a monitoring officer - Full Hazmat incident
Level 3 - Additional 2 Pumps, FRU with DIM, SSU and a Group manager to Monitor. - Large Scale Hazmat
Level 4 - Incidents attracting special mobilising criteria
What should be requested at Large Hazmat incidents (10 or more GTS)?

Does the deployment of DIM and Hazmat equipment make an incident a confirmed Hazmat?
No, That decision rests with the IC, in conjunction with advise from the HMEPO and RRT (CBRN) if in attendance.
