7.6 Blood vessels and their functions Flashcards
what are the different types of blood vessels?
- arteries
- arterioles
- veins
- capillaries
what do arteries do?
transport blood rapidly under high pressure from the heart to the tissues
what are arterioles and what do they do?
- they are smaller versions of arteries but under lower pressures
- they are between arteries and capillaries
- control the flow of blood between the two
what do veins do?
transport blood under low pressure to the heart from the tissues
what do capillaries do?
exchange metabolic materials (CO2, 02, C6H12O6) between the blood and the body cells
+ slow blood movement
what are the layer in blood vessels?
- lumen
- endothelium
- elastic layer
- muscle layer
- tough fibrous outer layer
what is the lumen?
the central cavity of the blood vessel
what is the endothelium?
inner layer of the blood vessel
- thin and smooth to allow less friction and diffusion
what does the elastic layer do?
helps maintain the blood pressure
stretches and recoils
what does the muscle layer do?
can contract and control blood flow
what does the fibrous outer layer do?
resist pressure changes from both within and outside the blood vessel
structure of arteries related to their function
thicker muscle layer than veins
- can be constricted and dilated in order to control vol of blood passed
thicker elastic layer to veins
