7.4 The structure of the heart Flashcards
what type of blood does the left side of the heart deal with?
oxygenated
what type of blood does the right side of the heart deal with?
deoxygenated
what are the two types of chambers in the heart?
atrium
ventricle
what is the atrium?
thin-walled and elastic
stretches as it collects blood
what is the ventricle?
same as atrium but with a thicker wall
why do ventricles have thicker walls compared to the atria?
has to contract strongly to pump blood
- to the lungs
- to the rest of the body
What are the two valves between the atria and the ventricles?
- left atrioventricular (bicuspid valve)
- right atrioventricular (tricuspid valve)
What does the aorta connect to? What blood does it carry?
- left ventricle
- carry oxygenated blood to all parts of the body (not lungs)
What does the vena cava connect to? What blood does it carry?
- right atrium
- deoxygenated blood from the tissues
What does the pulmonary artery connect to? What blood does it carry?
- right ventricle
- deoxygenated blood to the lungs
What does the pulmonary vein connect to? What blood does it carry?
- left atrium
- oxygenated blood back from the lungs
What blood vessels supply the heart muscle with oxygen?
Coronary arteries that branch off the aorta
What other way is heart attack called?
Myocardial infarction
