7.5 Flashcards
What is a chromosomal abnormality?
A chromosomal abnormality is a change in the normal structure or number of chromosomes, which can lead to genetic disorders.
What is non-disjunction?
Non-disjunction is the failure of homologous chromosomes or sister chromatids to separate properly during cell division.
Repeating a sequence (duplicating) in a chromosome
Duplication
Having an extra chromosome
Trisomy
Missing one chromosome
Monosomy
What is the difference between a deletion and a duplication?
A deletion removes a segment of a chromosome, while a duplication repeats a segment.
What is X-chromosome inactivation?
The two X chromosomes in a cell, one is inactivated due to only needing one of them to send proteins. The other becomes a Barr Body
