1.3 Flashcards
What are the two steps for writing a hypothesis?
- A reason for observation
- Writing a testable statement.
What are the parts of a controlled experiment?
One Control Group
Differ by indep. variable
1 or more experimental groups
What does a error bar with overlap tell you?
The difference between the groups is not statistically significant.
What does an error bar with NO overlap tell you?
The difference between the two groups is statistically significant.
Why is a control group important in an experiment?
So we can compare with the experimental group, it gives us a standard.
Hypothesis: Mice will learn how to take less time to complete a maze if they receive a food reward on completion.
What is the independent and dependent variable?
Independent is the food reward.
Dependent is the time it takes.
Hypothesis: Mice will learn how to take less time to complete a maze if they receive a food reward on completion.
Which was the control group? Why is it needed?
Control groups are the mice not getting any food.
It is needed so we can compare with the experimental group and potentially see a difference in our data.
Hypothesis: Mice will learn how to take less time to complete a maze if they receive a food reward on completion.
Which was the experimental group?
Experimental groups is the one recieving the food reward.
When do you use a bar line? What about a line graph?
Bar- if independent variable is grouped
Line- if independent variable is quantified or related to time
Write a conclusion, using this data about fungicides and if they affect bees.
Fungicides group: 12.2 bees
Control Group: 43.2 bees
Error bars with NO overlap
Fungicides affect the bees population. In the data, the control group had 43.2 bees per colony, while the fungicide group has 12.2 bees per colony. The error bars given show us that there is no overlap, meaning there is a bigger difference. The fungicides are harmful to the bees.
