5.1 Flashcards
Catalysts that speed up chemical reactions.
Enzyme
Reactant that binds to enzyme.
Substrate
Substrate fits into enzyme.
Active Site
What property?
Each enzyme fits into a specific substrate.
Reaction Specific
What property?
The single enzyme can fit for a lot of reactions.
Not Consumed in Reaction
What property?
Is sometimes made up of RNA.
Made up of proteins
What property?
Denatured if the temp is hot/or the pH is high/low.
Affected by Cellular Conditions.
Fits substrate a specfic way. causing it to change shape a little and less activation energy.
Induced Fit Model.
How would you maximze enzyme activity?
Adding more enzyme/substrate concentration.
How would you minimize enzyme activty?
Making it hotter/colder.
Less concentration for substrate/enzyme.
How can enzymes be turned ON?
Activators
Coenzymes.
How can enzymes be turned OFF?
Inhibitors.
Difference between competitive and noncompetitive inhibitors?
Competitive go IN the active site before the substrate making it OFF. Noncompetitive attach to the enzyme and change the shape to something that does not fit substrate.
Lactase performs hydrolysis reaction on lactose. What is the substrate and what are the products?
Glucose and Galactose.
