10.1 Flashcards
Includes biotic and abiotic resources that a species uses: What, Where, When, and How it uses them.
Niche
The space a species can use/take up.
Fundamental Niche
The space the species can use depending on interactions around them.
Realized Niche
Both species going after the same resources
Competition
Both species benefit with each other.
Mutualism
One benefits from the other, the other is left unharmed
Commensalism
Animal eating another animal
Predation
An animal eating plants
Herbivory
One harms the other
Parasitism
Mutualism: one is receiving benefits but can survive without them.
Facultative
Mutualism: Depending on each other (specific)
Obligatory
What is likely to happen if the niches of two species overlap a little?
Overtime they end up getting rid of that overlap and have their own niches.
What is likely to happen if the niches of two species overlap a lot?
They will still lose that overlap and share resources some way. (Niche Partiioning)
How can niche partitioning increase the biodiversity of a community?
They end up sharing resources in some way and can live in the same areas.
What are some ways species partition their niches?
By time, what they eat or where they nest/live.
No two species can have the same niche at the same time.
Garse’s Competitive Exclusion Principle.
