status
a socially-defined position within society
master status -> the one that dominates other statuses
ascribed (assigned by society, gender/race) or achieved (effort-based, profession)
social roles
expectations for people of a given social status
role conflict
male nurse, gay priest
role strain
a single status results in conflicting expectations
“too gay” or “not gay enough”
role exit
disengaging from a role closed tied to one’s self-identity, taking on another
ex. transitioning from working to retired
organizations (3 types)
- businesses, governments, religious groups
increase replaceability - McDonalds is the same regardless of the people
three types:
- Utilitarian (members are paid)
- Normative (morally-driven)
- Coercive (no choice prison)
emotion
unconscious appraisal of situations and people
empathy
ability to identify with others’ emotions
equal between the sexes
women are more likely to EXPRESS empathy
women experience emotional events more deeply
impression management (self-presentation) - 2 types
manage their own image by influencing the perception of others
assertive - active behaviors like showing off flashy status symbols
defense - avoidance, self-handicapping (creating obstacles and excuses to avoid self-blame; somebody who loudly declares she did not study, to avoid being blamed on her intelligence)

front stage - craft the way we come across (work)
back stage - let down our guard (home)
nonverbal communication
gestures, touch, body language, eye contact, facial expressions, finer subtleties
verbal communication
pitch, volume, rate, intonation, rhythm
mimicry

attraction (3 factors)
- proximity
- physical attractiveness (positive personality are judged more attractive)
