72. monocytes Flashcards
What type of cells are monocytes
large, phagocytic leukocyte cells
agranulocyte
what are monocytes precursor to
macrophages, osteoclasts, microglia etc
how do you spot monocyte down the microscope
*largest cell
- bluish grey in colour due to lysosomes/azurophillic granules
- bean/horseshoe shaped nucleus
What is the chromatin like in monocytes
less condensed that lymphocytes
How are monocytes important in immune defence
they are all antigen presenting cells
How do monocytes develop and by which process
What happens after they mature
Monocytopoiesis
from the bone marrow from MONOBLAST CELLS
monoblasts mature to become monocytes, they circulate blood, then penetrate CONNECTIVE TISSUE
They further mature and acquire PHAGOCYTIC PROPERTIES
What are the three main functions of monocytes
phagocytosis
antigen presentation
cytokine production
