60. 61. white + brown adipose connective tissue Flashcards
what type of cells do adipose tissue contain and function
adipocytes - fat storing cells ( BIGGEST STORGE SITE FOR ENERGY)
Also contains lipocytes
- storage for neutral fats (mostly triglycerides) +
regulators of body’s energy metabolism.
what is white adipose tissue
more common type for fat storage
- consists of cells each containing one large cytoplasmic droplet of whitish-yellow fat.
what is brown adipose tissue
Brown adipocytes release heat and warm the blood
-contains cells with multiple lipid droplets interspersed among
mitochondria: gives it darker look
Function of adipose tissue
helps to shape the surface
of the body
shock absorbers/ cushion ( for palms and toe pads)
helps wth thermal insulation of the body
helps to keep some organs in place
secretes various types of molecules (hormones -adipokines)
has a rich blood supply
structure white adipose tissue
-very large
- contains a single huge droplet of lipid filling
almost all cell (UNIOCULAR.)
- lipids usually removed for microscopy so looks like empty cell
-flattened nucleus squeezed to edge.
- thing ring of cytoplasm (signet ring cell)
where is brown adipose tissue found
makes 2%-5% of the newborn body w
mainly in the back, neck, and shoulders,
greatly reduced during childhood and adolescence
- hibernating animals
- shoulder girdle of rodents
why is it brown in colour
lots of BLOOD CAPILLARIES + MITOCHONDRIA (due to cytochromes)
. Brown adipocytes contain many small lipid
inclusions therefore MULTIOCULAR
Function of brown adipose tissue
Mainly for postnatal life
thermoregulation
produces heat+ lipid (not to store)
resembles an endocrine gland
structure of brown adipose
polygonal cells
smaller cells (up to 60 µm)
lots of of lipid droplets
spherical central nucleus
numerous brown mitochondria with abundant long cristae
subdivided into lobules
richly vascularized tissue
