7.1 Flashcards
What are similarities in amino acid structures?
Have a carboxyl group COOH, amino group, hydrogen atom, and carbon atom
Differences in amino acid structures?
The R group
How to know if a side chain is polar?
Hydroxyl or sulfhydryl
How to know if a side chain is acidic?
Carboxyl
How to know if a side chain is basic?
Amino
How to know if a side chain is nonpolar/hydrophobic
Carbon and hydrogen atoms
What is a primary structure?
Order of amino acids in a chain
What Is a secondary bond?
Regular sections of folding can be seen in all polypeptides. Hydrogen bonds between carboxyls and amines. A helix B- Pleated Sheet
What is a tertiary bond
Final 3d shape of a single polypeptide. Determined by interactions of side chains of amino acids. Hydrophobic folds in hydrophilic goes to outside acidic and basic form ionic bonds. Cysteins attract to each other.
What is a quaternary bond?
More than one polypeptide bonded together.
Denaturation
Conditions that disrupt H bonds and ionic bonds
What are some causes of denaturation
Temperature, PH, and salinity
What can a mutation cause
Every structure of a protein to change
