3.2 Flashcards
What is ecological succession?
process of change in the species that make up an ecological community over time.
What is primary succession?
beginning step of ecological succession where species known as pioneer species colonize an uninhabited site
What is secondary succession?
happens when a climax community or intermediate community is impacted by a disturbance.
Pioneer Species
Species that colonize an uninhibited land
Seral stages
The series of relatively transitory plant communities that develop during ecological succession from bare ground to the climax stage.
Climax stage
The final stage of ecological succession attainable by a plant community
Species richness
Amount of different types of species
Species evenness
How proportionally species are spread out through a habitat
Keystone Species
Species neccessary for a habitat to thrive and without them it wouldn’t exist
Invasive Species
Nonnative species that take over
Is a glacier an example of primary or secondary succession
Primary because there is no soil
Is a forest fire an example of primary or secondary succession?
Secondary because there is still soil left
