4.1 Flashcards
What is an ecosystem?
All of the organisms in a community plus the abiotic factors
What is productivity?
the rate at which energy is added to the bodies of a group of organisms (such as primary producers) in the form of biomass
What is efficiency?
the efficiency with which energy is transferred from one trophic level to the next
What are the inputs in photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide, light, and water
What are the outputs in photosynthesis?
Glucose and oxygen
What are the inputs in respiration?
Glucose and oxygen
What are the outputs in respiration?
Carbon dioxide, light, and water
What organisms perform respiration and photosynthesis?
Plants and mainly producers
What is shown in a pyramid of energy vs. a pyramid of numbers vs. a pyramid of biomass
Pyramid of energy will always be upright because energy is always lost from one tropic level to the next. Pyramid of numbers shows amount of organisms at each trophic level. Pyramid of biomass shows total organic matter at each trophic level.
Why it is considered more efficient to eat at a lower trophic level vs. a higher trophic level
There is more energy available at a lower trophic level.
How does solar energy relate to productivity?
When there is more sunlight productivity is higher
