2.1 Study Guide Flashcards
Population
a particular section, group, or type of people or animals living in an area or country.
Population Density
The number of organisms in a given area that can affect the population due to competition for resources, such as predation and spread of disease
Population Distribution
Dispersal patterns within a population
Clumped Spacing
Most common distribution, species do this because of resource location or social behavior
Random Spacing
Independent of others, resources uniform, abundant resources
Uniform Spacing
Scarce social interactions, territorial
Calculate population density
Number of individuals, area or volume occupied
Calculate Random Sampling
of organisms in sample/ area of sample = total # of organisms/ total area
Calculate Mark and Recapture
of total organisms/ total marked = total # of recaptured/ # of recaptured with marks
How can you predict density?
Distribution patterns
