7.1 Flashcards
What are three roles of the endocrine system?
- Growth
- Homeostasis
- Reproduction
List some major endocrine glands
- Thymus
- Thyroid
- Adrenals
- Pancreas
- Testes/ovaries
- Pituitary
- Pineal
- Hypothalamus
List three non classical endocrine glands, and one hormone that each releases
- Heart (Atrial Natriuretic Peptide)
- Kidneys (Renin)
- Liver (IGF-1)
Endocrine vs exocrine glands
Endocrine: ductless, release into surrounding fluid
Exocrine: contain ducts, release onto a surface
What differentiates thyroid hormones from catecholamines?
Thyroid Hormones: Single benzene ring, no iodine
Catecholamines: Two benzene rings, ionidation
Which type of amine hormone is hydrophilic and which is hydrophobic?
Hydrophilic: Catecholamines
Hydrophobic: Thyroid hormone
List some organs that secrete steroid hormones, and the hormones they secrete
- Testes (testosterone)
- Ovaries (oestrogen/progesterone)
- Adrenal cortex (e.g. dehydroepiandrosterone)
List some organs that secrete amine hormones and what they secrete
- Thyroid (T3 and T4)
- Adrenal glands (adrenaline)
List some organs that secrete peptide hormones and what they secrete
- Heart (ANP)
- Ant. Pituitary (CRH, PRH)
- Post. Pituitary (oxytocin)
