RAPID alternation between two or more treatments/independent variables, while repeatedly measuring the dependent variable
No need to wait for a steady state responding before alternating to the next treatment condition
Similar to the logic of withdrawal design except this one has very brief phases
Multielement design
Experimental control is demonstrated when the dependent variable is consistently different in one condition relative to the others. I.e., there’s differentiation in the data paths. They’re not all tangled together
Multi element design
Can be good for comparing
-two or more treatments or assessment conditions Such as with a functional analysis
Advantages of a multi element design
Subject to multiple treatment Interference
May require considerable attention toward proper counterbalancing
Not good for behavior that doesn’t reverse, has a long latency to change,
Not good for individuals that have difficulty forming discriminations between conditions
However, issues with the discriminability of different conditions might be mitigated by taking steps to make them more discriminable such as:
Use salient stimuli,
Use additional SD’s
Use fewer conditions or use instructions
