20 Direct Instruction Flashcards
A model for teaching that emphasizes a well developed and carefully planned lesson plans designed around small learning increments and clearly defined and prescribe teaching tasks.
Based on the theory that clear instruction eliminating miss interpretations can greatly Improve and accelerate learning
Usually involves a script for the teacher.
Can be done individually or with a group in choral responding format
Direct instruction
Students are placed in an instructional setting at their skill level
instruction is modified To accommodate each student rate of learning
Programs or field tested and revised before publication to ensure the program structure will lead to student mastery of the content
Teachers script is used for instructing students on rules, examples, non-examples, principles and procedures
Students often respond simultaneously i.e., chorally, sometimes at a rate of about 10 responses per minute
The volley between teacher and student responses is very rhythmic and students typically respond loudly and enthusiastically
Direct instruction
ASR 1
Direct instruction does not include:
Loud, enthusiastic student responding
Choral responding from groups
Teach Scripps that in for student mastery
Droning on and boring tedious
D
A system for defining instructional targets, monitoring daily performance, and organizing and presenting performance data in a uniform manner to facilitate timely and effective instructional designs
Does not dictate what should be taught or how instruction should proceed.
Rather, it represents a set of strategies and tactics for a valuation whatever program a teacher might choose to implement.
Involves a daily recording of the frequencies of different classroom performances on a standard chart.
In practice, the frequency i.e., rate of responses and time spent recording those responses, I tracked and displayed on a standardized chart or graph-Historically the standard celeration chart – SCC
Precision teaching
If a student’s performance is progressing to fluency or not, it will show on the chart.
The chart allows students and teachers to make daily, timely and quick instructional decisions that are based on the data
Standard celeration chart - used in precision teaching
NOT On the fourth edition test
Course material is broken down into two units, each of which has text materials, essays and quizzes at the end
Proctors, former students, immediately grade performance of students on the quizzes and also provide for mediation of tutoring
Students take the quizzes at their own pace and cannot progress to the next unit until the master the quizzes from the previous units
Personalized system of instruction
- Self pacing: a student is permitted to move through the chorus at a speed that fits with his or her ability and time constraints
- Mastery learning: a student can only move to the next unit after they’ve achieved 90 to 100% on unit quizzes, and they get repeated opportunities to demonstrate such mastery
- Emphasis on the written word and/or audio visual recordings: permanent instructional materials and clear objectives are carefully structured from simple to more complex and are the sources of critical information rather than live lectures.
- Lectures and demonstrations are for motivation: lectures are not to be a source of critical information. So the teacher is less of a talking book and more of a learning system manager/creator of curriculum materials
- Student proctor is: repeated testing, immediate scoring, tutoring, and one to one attention can be achieved through the use of well-qualified former student proctors
In addition to students benefiting from the proctors, the practice benefit through learning more by teaching and the teacher benefits to having more time for devoting to activities that require greater levels of expertise
Five features that distinguish PSI (Personalize system of instruction) from conventional teaching procedures
ASR
Which of the following is not true of precision teaching
It provides a well-planned, stand alone instructional sequence from a highly structured curriculum
Continuous data graphs on a standard display allows teachers to regularly make quick database decisions
The frequency of student responses is typically track an effort to get students to demonstrate fluency in a skill
None of the above
A
ASR
Which of the following is most true of PSI?
It requires choral responding from groups
The frequency of student responses is tracked on an SCC in effort to get students to demonstrate fluency in a skill
Lectures are not the main source of critical information
All of the above
C. Lectures are not the main source of critical information
Choice A is descriptive of Direct instruction
Choice B is more typical of Precision teaching
