7- Movement Strategy Flashcards
What is the function of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC)?
Generation of mental body image (body position in space) using somatosensory, visual and proprioceptive information
What are the 2 functional areas in the PPC?
Area 5 and area 7
Where does area 5 receive input from?
Somatosensory cortex
What does area 7 control?
Higher order visual areas
What can a lesion to the right hemisphere cause?
Abnormalities of body image and spatial relations, and neglect
What is neglect?
Inability to pay attention to certain parts of the world
3 functions of the supplementary motor area?
Controlling abstract thought, decision making, and anticipation of consequences of action
2 things that a lesion to the supplementary motor area can cause
Apraxia, and difficulties coordinating/planning movement
What does the premotor cortex (PMC) control?
Specific movement preferences
What does the PMC record?
The goal, not sensory stimuli
When are ventral PMC neurons active?
During performance and observation of actions
Where do mirror neurons play a role?
In imitating movements
When are mirror neurons most strongly active?
When one watches a behaviour in which one is already competent
What do motor neurons do in somatopic organisation?
Motor neurons excite extensor motor neurons and inhibit flexor motor neurons
What does the primary motor cortex code?
Force and direction- population coding of movement in M1
