7- Basal Ganglia and Cerebellum Flashcards
What is the basal ganglia able to do?
Promote and inhibit movement
What does the basal ganglia consist of? (4 things)
- Striate (caudate nucleus and putamen)
- Subthalamic nucleus
- Globus pallidus
- Substantia nigra
What does the thalamus want to do in the basal ganglia?
To excite the motor cortex
What is the role of the direct pathway in the basal ganglia?
Facilitates movement
What does the globus pallidus do to the thalamus?
Inhibits it
How does the thalamus get inhibited in the direct pathway?
By the globus pallidus being active at rest
What does inhibiting the globus pallidus in the direct pathway do?
Releases the thalamus from inhibition
What happens to the globus pallidus in the indirect pathway?
External inhibition is reduced
How is the thalamus inhibited in the indirect pathway?
By activation of the globus pallidus internus and substantia nigra
How are disorders of the basal ganglia cause?
The nigrostriatal pathway excites the direct pathway and inhibits the indirect pathway, and degeneration of the substantia nigra and inputs to the striatum
What is involved in the cerebellum function?
Sequence of muscle contractions
