What is employee representation?
When employees are part of a formal structure for involving them in the decision making process.
What are the benefits of employee representation?
Increases empowerment and motivation of the workforce.
Lower risk of disputes e.g. strikes.
Informed decision making as experience and insight taken into consideration.
What are the drawbacks of employee representation?
Time consuming - can slow decision making.
What are the main roles of trade unions?
Represent and negotiate.
Protect workers.
What are the benefits for an a player or having a good relationship with the trade union?
More likely to work out successfully for everyone.
Interests of employee are protected so employee morale and motivation improved.

Mediation.
Conciliation.

What is mediation?
Someone impartial tries to reach a solution.
What is conciliation?
Employer and employee discuss issue with conciliator to understand each others perspective.
What is arbitration?
Impartial outside is asked to make a decision based on evidence.
Why is industrial action bad for the business?
Lost sales and profit from lost output.
Internal distraction - decrease productivity.
Damage to customer satisfaction.
What are the impacts of industrial action on the employees?
Lost pay.
Potential for lost jobs if actions result in cutting costs.
