6.1 flashcards
What is a functional group?
Parts of organic molecules that are involved in chemical reactions
What is the chemical formula of hydroxyl? is it polar, nonpolar, or charged?
- OH, polar
What is the chemical formula of carbonyl? is it polar, nonpolar, or charged?
-COH, -CO-, polar
What is the chemical formula of carboxyl? is it polar, nonpolar, or charged?
-COOH-, negative
What is the chemical formula of amino? is it polar, nonpolar, or charged?
-NH2, positive charge
What is the chemical formula of sulthydryl? is it polar, nonpolar, or charged?
-SH, slightly polar
What is the chemical formula of phosphate? is it polar, nonpolar, or charged?
-PO4, nonpolar
What is the chemical formula of methyl? is it polar, nonpolar, or charged?
CH3, negatively charged
What is an isomer?
molecules with the same molecular formula but different structures
What are monomers and polymers?
monomers are singular molecules that make up polymers, and polymers are multiple monomers that can be broken apart and rearranged to creater new polymers
How are polymers formed? What happens during this process?
Dehydration synthesis, one monomers donates OH and one other monomer donates H in order to take H2O out
How are polymers broken ba ck into monomers? What happens during this process?
Hydrolosis/digestion: uses H2O to break down polymers, H+ and OH- atttach to enzymes
