2.1 Population Ecology Flashcards
What is a population?
group of individuals of same species in same area at same time
What are some abiotic factors that affect a population’s size?
sunlight, precipitation, and soil
What are some biotic factors that affect a population’s size?
prey, predators, competitors, parasites, and diseases
What is distribution?
a way to show the spatial relationship between members of a population
What is an example of uniform distribution?
Territorial birds like penguins and apple trees in an orchardW
What is an example of random distribution?
Dandelions.
What is an example of clumped distribution?
Elephant and wolf pack
How do you estimate the population for random sampling?
of organisms in sample / area of sample = total # = total of recaptured organisms.
Why do some species tend to have a uniform distribution?
because resources are scarce and there is competiteveness within population
Why do some species have a random distribution?
because they have an abundance of resources and no social interactions that affect the distribution
Why do some species has a clumped distribution?
because resources are clumped and there is an important social network
