different things you can bring to school that can help you succeed. the way you talk the stuff you know etc. even family connections that can give you an advantage over everyone else. going to museum may give you an edge at school
what is symbolic violence
when schools prefer a certain way of doing things or certain type of knowledge over others. have values of some behaviour or activities
why is symbolic violence a problem
makes some students feel like what they know isn’t respected by school because it doesn’t match school values

others find it more challenging because school doesn’t recognise their strengths
what happens if symbolic capital is not achieved at school
everyone want symbolic capital from someone
if not achieve at school, it will be deemed in peer groups and friends ratings and reactions
how is wearing brands a way of gaining symbolic capital amongst peers
brands often clash with school values, and people want the capital from peers as school won’t allow. if seen as stylish you’ll be more popular
why is symbolic capital harder for working class students to achieve
they won’t be able to afford brands so will have to gain capital through other methods which may not be as efficient or clean. it won’t be academic methods wither
how can symbolic capital affect the path you’re set on in life
it can bring together new groups of people which can alter your perspective. maybe from going to uni you might want to focus on something less dependable
how can wearing nike become an identity
symbolic violence - alternative ways of self worth- class identities- wearing nike- strongly gendered- not conforming to style- social suicide- conflict with style of school- teachers see bad taste- pupils are rebels

unconditional, close to home for low travel costs, degrees that guarantee jobs
