5.4 mRNA Translation Flashcards
What is a codon?
a set of three nucleotides
What is an anticodon?
a set of three nucleotides that bind with the codon
What is the role of rRNA?
facilitates matching of mRNA and tRNA, joins amino acids to synthesize proteins
What is the role of tRNA?
transfers amino acids, contains anticodons that pair with mRNA codons
What is the role of mRNA?
contains the message/code for amino acid sequence
What is tRNA sythase?
puts enzymes together
What is translation?
it translates the sequence of mRNA
What is a mutation?
a change in the base sequence in a molecule of DNA
What is a point mutation?
substitution of single base
What is a silent mutation?
no amino acid change, redundancy in code
What is a missense?
changes in amino acid
What is a nonsense?
changes to stop codon
What is a frameshift?
insert/delete bases, shifts how you read codons
How are mutations good and bad?
good: resistance to bacteria
bad: cancer
