5.2 DNA Replication Flashcards
What is DNA replication?
a process where it makes an exact copy of a DNA strand
When does DNA replication take place?
before cell division
Where does DNA replication take place?
animals/humans- inside the nucleus and bacterial cells- the cytoplasm
What are the stages of cell division?
helicase, DNA polymerase,
primase, and ligase
What does helicase do?
unzips DNA by breaking hydrogen bonds
What does DNA polymerase do?
adds nucleotides to build DNA (A, T, G, and C)
What does primase do?
lays down primer so the DNA knows where to start working
What does ligase do?
helps glue DNA fragments together
What is a leading strand?
a continuous strand
What is a lagging strand?
a strand that stops/starts making DNA fragments
What is the structure of DNA?
double stranded, goes 5’ to 3’, made up of a phosphate group, a sugar, and nucleotides
