4.2 Energy Cycles Flashcards
What is the ATP-ADP cycle?
ATP is stored chemical energy, a phosphate group then gets removed creating a release of energy (aka catabolic and exergonic reactions), then makes ADP, after that the phophate group is back added into the cycle (aka anabolic and endergonic reactions), lastly its back to ATP and they cycle repeats
What is metabolism?
all chemical reactions of life
What is an anabolic reaction?
making larger molecules out of smaller ones
What is a catabolic reaction?
breaking down larger molecules into smaller ones
What is an exergonic reaction?
release of energy
What is an endergonic reaction?
input of energy
What is hydrolysis?
the chemical breakdown of a compound due to reaction with water
What is dehydration sythesis?
the creation of larger molecules from smaller monomers where a water molecule is released
What does a graph of an edergonic reaction look like?
starts with less reactant and ends with more product
What does a graph of an exergonic reaction look like?
starts with more reactants and ends with less product
Why does an exergonic reaction have to happen before an endergonic reaction?
exergonic reactions have to release chemical energy for endergonic reactions
