2.2 Charges and Attractions Flashcards
What is coulombic attraction?
predicts when magnitude of force will change when magnitude of charge/distance changes
How is force related to charge?
whatever happens to force will happen to charge, direct relationship
What is a direct relationship?
one goes up, the other goes up, one goes down, the other goes down
How is force related to distance?
as distance increases, the charge becomes smaller, indirect relationship
What is an inverse relationship?
as distance increases, the force decreases by that magnitude^2
How are valence electrons affected by distance from nucleus?
more distance = more coulombic attraction = less electrons in between sheild/repel
How are valence electrons affected by amount of protons?
more protons = more charge = more coulombic attraction
How are valence electrons afftected by amount of electrons between nucleus and the valence shell?
valence electrons have a weaker hold the more electrons you add
What happens as you go down the periodic table?
the weaker the hold/bond
What happens as you go the right of the periodic table?
the stronger the hold/bond
What happens as you go up the periodic table?
the stronger the hold/bond
What happens as you go to the left of the periodic table?
the weaker the hold/bond
What is electronegativity?
the amount of energy an electron bond has
What is the strongest element with electronegativity?
He/ Helium
What is the weakest element with electronegativity?
Fr/ Francium
