5.2 Phagocytosis Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 2 types of white blood cells?
A
- phagocytes
- lymphocytes
2
Q
What is phagocytosis?
A
Mechanism that cells called phagocytes engulf large particles in their vesicles formed from cell membrane.
3
Q
What are the stages of phagocytosis?
A
- opsonin binds to the antigen of the pathogen
- neutrophil binds to the attached opsonin and engulf the pathogen
- phagosome forms around the engulfed pathogen
- lysosomes fuse with the phagosome and release lysozymes into it
- the lysozymes break down the pathogen and destroy it
4
Q
What is opsonin?
A
An antibody that is not specific which binds to different pathogens.
5
Q
What is neutrophil?
A
A type of phagocyte
6
Q
What is phagosome?
A
A vesicle
7
Q
What are lysozymes?
A
Hydrolytic enzymes
