(2.5 Inorganic ions) Flashcards
What are inorganic ions?
Atoms with charges but don’t contain carbon.
What are the 2 types of ions?
- cation
- anion
What are cations?
Positively charged ions
What are anions?
Negatively charged ions
Where do inorganic ions occur in?
Solution in the cytoplasm and body fluids of organisms
Do different inorganic ions have different concentrations?
Yes, some are in high concentrations and some are in very low concentrations.
What determines the ions’ specific roles?
Their structures and properties
What are the examples of inorganic ions?
- iron ion
- sodium ion
- hydrogen ion
- phosphate ion
What is the function of iron ions?
Bind to oxygen within haemoglobin
What are the functions of sodium ions?
- co-transport glucose and amino acids
- generate nerve impulses
What are the functions of hydrogen ions?
- maintain pH level
- aerobic respiration
- help with enzyme-controlled reactions
What are the functions of phosphate ions?
- allow phosphodiester bonds forms in DNA and RNA
- release energy (found in ATP)
Where are phosphate ions found?
- DNA
- RNA
- ATP
- phospholipids
