4.2 Diffusion Flashcards
What is diffusion?
Movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
How can diffusion occur?
When there are different concentrations of the same substance.
What is facilitated diffusion?
Diffusion that involves the presence of carrier protein molecules to allow passive movement of substance across membrane.
What are channel proteins?
Proteins that form water-filled hydrophilic channels across the membrane.
What is the function of channel protein?
Allow specific water-soluble ions to pass through.
What are carrier proteins?
Proteins that bind to ions or molecules like glucose and amino acids, then change shape in order to move these molecules across the membrane.
What are the factors that affect the rate of diffusion?
- temperature
- surface area
- diffusion distance
- diffusing molecules
- concentration gradient
- water potential
- number of channel protein
- number of carrier protein
