4.3 Osmosis Flashcards
What is osmosis?
Movement of water molecules from an area of higher water potential to an area of lower water potential through a permeable membrane.
What is a solute?
Any substances that is dissolved in a solvent.
What is water potential?
The pressure created by water molecules
Which Greek letter is used to represent water potential?
ψ (psi)
What is water potential measured in?
kPa (kilopascal)
What is the water potential of pure water?
0
Is water potential always more than 0 or less than 0?
Less than 0
What will happen to the water potential as the amount of solute increases?
Lower
What is hypertonic?
When the concentration of solute is higher than the concentration in cell.
What is hypotonic?
When the concentration of solute is lower than the concentration in cell.
What is isotonic?
When the concentration of solute is equal to the concentration in cell.
What is the net movement of water if a cell is in a hypertonic solution?
Leave the cell
What is the net movement of water if a cell is in a hypotonic solution?
Enter the cell
What is the net movement of water if a cell is in an isotonic solution?
Neither enters or leaves the cell
What will happen to an animal cell if it is in a hypertonic solution?
Shriveled
