5.2 Metabolism Flashcards
What is an exergonic reaction?
A reaction with a net release of energy.
What is an endergonic reaction?
A reaction with a net gain of energy.
What is an anabolic reaction and what “gonic” reaction does it pertain to?
Anabolic reactions CREATE larger molecules out of smaller ones. It pertains to endergonic.
What is a catabolic reaction and what “gonic” reaction does it pertain to?
Catabolic reactions BREAK larger molecules into smaller ones. It pertains to exergonic.
What does ATP stand for?
Adenosine Tri-Phosphate
What does ADP stand for?
Adenosine Di-Phosphate
When going from ADP to ATP, do we add or remove a phosphate?
Add
When excess energy is released, what does our body do with it?
Extra body functions
Where do we get energy added to make ATP?
Eating food and digesting it.
Do endergonic reactions require a kickstart of energy?
No
Do exergonic reactions require a kickstart of energy?
Yes; they have a higher activation energy to begin the reaction, and once we do an endergonic reaction we have enough energy from the exergonic to begin the process.
What is an example of a catabolic reaction?
Hydrolysis
