11.2 Ecology Flashcards
Inputs of photosynthesis?
Sunlight, H2O, CO2
Outputs of photosynthesis?
Glucose, O2
How does energy flow through a food chain as opposed to carbon?
Energy is used up in different ways upon consumption and time an organism is alive, only passing on 10% to the next consumer. Carbon stays relatively stable and passes from one carbon sink to the next, being reused constantly.
What is nitrogen fixation?
The first step of the nitrogen cycle, when atmospheric nitrogen is fixed in the soil for easy access to organisms.
What is nitrification
The process of turning ammonium into usable forms of nitrogen such as nitrate and nitrite.
What is denitrification
Converts nitrogen compounds back into atmospheric nitrogen
Inputs and outputs of Cellular Respiration?
Glucose + O2 -> CO2 + H2O + energy (ATP)
