2.3 Types of Bonds Flashcards
What is an ionic bond?
A bond that attracts a metal and nonmetal together, high + low EN.
What is polar covalent bond?
Covalent means they share electrons. Polar covalent is more specific, meaning they have two opposite ends of EN that still share electrons/
What is nonpolar covalent?
Nonpolar means that the elctrons are being shared equally between the atoms.
What happens to ionics in water?
They separate quickly
What happens to covalents in water?
They disperse from eachother but stay connected within the individual atoms.
Match the electronegativity (EN) to the bond.
POLAR
NONPOLAR
IONIC
(DIFFERENT EN BUT STILL SHARES ELECTRONS)
(HIGH + LOW EN)
(SAME EN)
POLAR -> DIFFERENT BUT STILL SHARES
NONPOLAR ->SAME EN
IONIC -> HIGH + LOW
