2.5 pH Flashcards
Explain the difference between cohesion and adhesion?
Cohesion is bonding to each other, and adhesion is the bonding between different atoms.
What is a solvent?
The substance you dissolve the solute into to make a solution.
What is heat of vaporization?
The energy it takes to evaporate something.
What is specific heat?
The energy is takes to heat something up one degree Celsius.
Is ice more or less dense than water?
Less dense
How do pH and pOH relate to H3O+ and OH-?
H3O+ is the -log of pH and OH- is the -log of pOH
What pH levels are needed for an Acid, Base, or Neutral substance
pH > 7 is a base, pH = 7 is neutral, pH < 7 is an acid
Why are cohesion and adhesion important?
They explain why things are held together the way they are
Why is the fact that ice is less dense relevant?
Protects animals and plant life from freezing in oceans, only the top freezes
Why is specific heat important
Boiling and cooking
Why is heat of vaporization important
Keep bodies of water in check
pH 12, what is OH-?
10 to -2
pOH 3, what is H3O+?
10 to -11
H3O+ 10 to -5, what is pH?
5
OH- is 10 to -9, what is pOH?
9
