5.1 Flashcards
What is an Enzyme?
Reaction catalyst
What is an active site?
Where substrate binds to
What is a substrate?
Where enzymes bind
What is activation energy?
The energy required to start a reaction
What does substrate concentration do to the reaction rate?
If the concentration increases, there are more opportunities for reactions, thus the rate of reactions goes up.
What does enzyme concentration do to the reaction rate?
More enzymes = more places for reactions to catalyze
What does temperature do to the reaction rate?
At highest and lowest temperatures, enzymes begin to denature
What does pH do to the reaction rate?
Changes structure of enzymes which changes reaction rate
Compare and contrast inhibition and activation.
The inhibitor binds to the active site or substrate preventing something else from binding. Activation enables the start of a reaction.
