5.1 Enzymes Flashcards
Enzymes will usually perform
hydrolysis or dehydration
enzyme
biological catalyst that is usually a protein
point of a catalyst
increase the speed with which a reaction happens
substrate
reactant which binds to enzyme
active site
where substrate fits into enzyme
properties of enzymes
reaction specific
not consumed in reaction
made of protein
affected by cellular conditions
factors affecting enzyme function
enzyme concentration
substrate concentration
temperature
pH
activators
inhibitors
collision theory
reactants have to collide (in right configuration with enough energy) for reaction to occur
how does temp affect enzymes
Raising temperature generally speeds up a reaction, and lowering temperature slows down a reaction.
how does pH affect enzymes
Each enzyme has an optimum pH range. Changing the pH outside of this range will slow enzyme activity.
enzyme concentration
Enzyme concentration refers to the number of enzymes present in an area. Changing this concentration can change the rate of the reaction that the enzymes are facilitating
substrate concentration
he amount of substrate present that can be turned into product
turning enzymes on
activator
cofactors
coenzymes
