5.1 - Data Types and Sources
Specification Points.
5.1 Information sources and data types, i.e.:
- internal source (e.g. internal financial reports,
market analysis) - external source (e.g. supplier price lists, financial
report from a third party) - primary data (e.g. reports direct from employees,
foot measurements taken in a shoe shop) - secondary data (e.g. survey results received from a market research organisation, interest rate charged
on a loan from a bank) - qualitative data (e.g. the colour of products, the names of employees)
- quantitative data (e.g. expiry date of medicines, the number of staff working in an organisation)

What is internal sources of information? Give examples.
Information that comes from within an organisation such as
financial reports, market analysis, data analysis or employee surveys
What would be the internal sources of information in PHPS?
Dates
Customer account registration details
( Example: Name, address, email, phone number, payment details)
Parcel tracking system data
( Tracking numbers, parcel statuses, delivery updates)
Courier GPS tracking
(Example: Location data from smartphones and GPS in vans)
Customer Parcel Collection Bookings
Data from parcel collection forms submitted by customers on their website (Parcel size, weight, insurance info)

What is external sources of information ? Provide examples.
Information that comes from outside an organisation this includes government reports, financial data or reports of competitors, or price lists from suppliers.

3rd party payment system or sites (emails/SMS)
International delivery services or customs
Example: Tracking continues across borders via local delivery networks (mentioned in the Heathrow airport delivery process).

Example: Customer inputs their own name, address, and parcel information.
What is primary data? + Examples
Gathered by you, or a member of your organisation.
Includes questionnaires, surveys, and interviews
Provide examples of primary data linking to PHPS
Customer registration form/their personal details (name, address, payment info).
Parcel delivery details submitted by customer.
Courier location data from GPS.
What is secondary data + Give examples
Gathered by people outside your organisation OR data that is gathered by third party sources/organisations.
Examples: includes the national census, a competitor’s/or another organisation’s primary research/surveys
Examples of secondary data linking to PHPS
Example: International tracking updates from external or third party carriers (e.g. once parcel reaches another country).
Example: Address formatting or country codes for parcel routing.

What is qualitative data + example
descriptive data that is composed of TEXT, and does not include numbers or is not measured.
example: survey opinions/responses for when customers get asked on why they visit a particular shop, people’s names…etc

Example: Parcel content descriptions (“fragile”, “documents”, etc.).
When customers is filling their delivery details through a form on their website they will need to state: whether the delivery is to a residential or business address.
If insurance is required for the parcel - ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ (this could be boolean too)
What is quantitative data + give examples
is composed of numbers not text, and is measurable (percentages, statistics)
example:
star ratings for a company (ranges from 1-5) which makes it quantitative
Linking it to PHPS what would quantitative data be?
Star rating 1-5 from customers/trust pilot
Measurements of the parcels
Delivery date/time
Number of parcels being collected
Tracking number count (e.g., how many were generated or used NOT the code/tracking ID itself)
