2.1 - information styles and their uses. Flashcards
text - what is it
- different character sets
western, cyrillic, arabic
text - what can it be used for
could be used to translate text but can be time consuming
graphics - what is it
static pictures which are both real and computer generated.
examples: logo, photograph, diagram
graphics - what can it be used for
it can convey stuff to everyone, it is easy to understand as it requires no text.
however a drawback could be that it isn’t detailed
animated graphics - what is it
moving pics - animation
animated graphics - what can it be used for
- it can be used in educational learning sites
- operation of the human heart
- pop up book character
video - what is it
usually a recording of real life
however, audio can also be accompanied with video. but u can also use audio for podcasts.
video - what can it be used for
spoken instructions
live broadcasting
however, the voice quality could be unclear and mistakes can be made
numerical data - what is it
this is - profit, dates, times.
it is quantitative data - statistics
numerical data - what can it be used for
it is good for when you’re analysing data from text data through database
boolean - what is it/what can be used for
- these are: two possible values which can either be yes or no.
it can be used for:
- survey questions
it is bad for:
detailed info as it doesn’t tell you other people’s opinions or what they are thinking in a business context.
accessibility information styles
it is helping those with disabilities.
these could be:
braille text, tactile images, and subtitles.
braille text
what it is - raised dots to represent characters for people who are blind or visually impaired.
it can be used:
for a written report printed on braille printer
tactile images
raised feelable surfaces to represent characters
subtitles
text overlayed on videos which transcribes audio - this can be translated.
databases
the data is stored in individual tables or just one.
why would you use a database?
- the tables can show groups of related information within the tables.
database advantages
- you can see results a lot more easily than just text on its own
- there’s less data redundancy so there’s less errors being made when you’re using it
- its easier to navigate compared to a spreadsheet
database disadvantages
not all types of data is suitable for tables, and it cannot be easily categorised.
spreadsheets
it analyses numerical data in columns and rows
advantages:
it has filters for specific information
you can calculate math automatically through using formulas
use autocomplete with built in functions and formulae.
disadvantages:
writing the formula to calculate the math can be complex.
not useful 4 large amounts of data
what else can you use a spreadsheet for ?
- validation, protecting areas of workbooks (locking cells so that formulas cannot be changed) : this helps with security and prevents mistakes.
- it can generate graphs and charts: this can help identify trends by representing data visually, which can then be used to make comparisons.
