3.4 - Stages of data analysis Flashcards
list the steps of data analysis
identify the need (what information is needed?)
define scope (e.g content, detail, timescales, constraints)
identify potential sources (e.g sales figures, customer surveys)
source and select information (e.g determine accuracy and reliability of sources, selecting the best)
select the most appropriate tools (e.g charts, graphs, regression, trend analysis)
process and analyse data (e.g set up a spreadsheet to produce a graph)
record and store information (e.g write a report based on the results of the processing)
share results (e.g send the report to stakeholders)
What is data analysis
Trying to discover useful information from usually lots of data
Step 1) Identify the need
what do you want to find out?
what is data is needed to allow this data analysis
Step 2) Define Scope
setting out more detail of the process.
this could be deciding:
- time scales
- constraints
- exact content
and what is realistic + what do you need
Step 3) Identify potential sources
where could the data come from - SECONDARY/PRIMARY RESEARCH?
(e.g sales figures, customer surveys)
Step 4) Source and select the information
- select best information available
- need to evaluate reliability/accuracy
DATA SET - is that particular snapshot of data that you research or collect at that point
Step 5) Select the most appropriate tool
This where you will decide what software you will use to do the data analysis
e.g charts, graphs, regression, trend analysis
Step 6) Process and analyse data
Analyse using the chosen tools (e.g using a spreadsheet to generate a graph to identify patterns)
7 - Record and store information
Once the data is analysed, it becomes useful information so you retain the analysis for later.
(e.g write a report based on the results of the processing)
8 - Share results
(e.g send the report to stakeholders - anyone whos interested in the analysis such as the team or manager
