5- Biological Basis of Nervous System Disorders Flashcards
1
Q
Schizophrenia
A
- dopamine hypothesis - too much
- mania is too much ser and NorEpi
- birth trauma/hypoxemia
- excessive marijuana in adolescence
- partially inherited
- treated w/ !!! neuroleptics/antipsychotic - block dopamine receptors
2
Q
Depressive
A
- decreased serotonin, dopamine, norepi
- mania is too much ser and NorEpi
- monoamine theory for depression/mania
- partial family linkage
- high cortisol, hippocampal atrophy, high glucose in amygdala/emotion
- MS/bipolar= more at risk of bipolar = genetic risk
3
Q
Alzheimers
A
- ACh loss = less enzyme ChAT choline acetyltransferase which makes ACh
- B-amyloid plaques
- neurofibrillary tangles
4
Q
Parkinson’s
A
- low dopamine productino in substantia nigra, which is part of basal ganglia
treatment: L-DOPA = precursor of dopamine- converted to dopamine when reaches brain - bradykinesia = slow movement
- resting tremor - when not using
- pill-rolling tremors
- masklike faces - no expression
- cogwheel rigidity- muscle tension stops movement
- shuffling gait
