How To Decide
Economic value

Culture and ecological value
Community/Political pressure
4 Strategies
No Active Intervention
Strategic Realignment
Hold The Line
Advance The Line
No Active Intervention
No investment, the coast is allowed to flood or retreat
Strategic Realignment
Allow the coastline to retereat but manage it so it’s in certain areas
Hold The Line
Build/maintain defences so the shoreline’s position stays the same overtime
Advance The Line
Build coastal defences on the seaward side of the coastal plain –> this usually leads to land reclamation
What Makes ICZM So Difficult
Storms destroy the ridge, meaning there is nowhere to build the ridge
Ignoring locals and prioritising businesses
Fair allocation of funds –> high transparency
Have to sacrifice other land areas like biosphere
What Makes It Work?
Local partnership scheme
It is phsically possible to build the defences that are required
Potentially profitable
