1.1 - Coasts Flashcards
Weathering
The break down of rocks and minerals on the surface
Littoral Zone
Area of shoreline where land is subject to wave action.
Backshore
Area above high tide mark, only affected by waves during major storm events.
Nearshore
Area of shallow water beyond tide mark, friction between the wave and seabed cause the wave to distort and crash down here.
Foreshore
Where the ride comes in and out.
Offshore
Area of deeper water beyond the point where waves break. Friction between waves and seabed cause distortion of waveshape.
Dynamic Equilibrium
Nothing in this area can change anymore
Dynamic Zone
Long-term changes = sea level variation due to climate change. ST Changes = high and low tide and wave energy due to weather conditions.
Rocky, Cliff Coastline
High relief
High energy
Estuartine Coastline r
Low relief
They form river mouths deposition>erosion, low energy environment and less resistant rock.
Sandy Coastline
Low relief
Low coastline
Estuartine Coastline
Where a body of water is surrounded by land but open to the sea on one side, rivers flow into this.
Relief
Resistance
Sediment Systems
Material is eroded, transported along and deposited elsewhere.
Coastal Plains
Land gradually slopes
Deposited sediments
