2.1 - North Antrim Coast Flashcards
North Antrim Coast
Predominantely rocky coastline in NI
History of volcanism
Slow cooling molten basalt erupted
Softer sedimentary rock, layed down by softer ocean
Covered by ice sheets during glaciation period
3 Rock Types
Sedimentary
Igenous
Metamorphic
Sedimentary Rock
Small compressed particles, deposited in layesr that are folded and compression, and is made of the dead fossils of plants and animals. Erosion is moderate to fast.
Igneous Rock
Hot, molten rock that solidifies and crystallises. Erosion is very slow.
Intrusive Igneous Rock
Where magma is trapped deep inside the rock
.
Extrusive Igneous Rock
Form from erupting magma, magma that oozes through fissures on the surface.
Metamorphic Rock
When a rock changes over a period of time due to physical changes e..g pressure, heat and chemical activity. This has slow erosion.
North Antrim Coast Rock Type
Mainly extrusive igneous rock and sedimentary rock, causing causing there to be a high variance in coastal recession on the coas.t
Age Of Rock
e.g. ancient limestones have been compressed and compacted over millions of years making them more resistant compared to more recently formed extrusive igneous rock.
Permeability Of Rock
Important as groundwater flow can exploit joints and structures, this can create high water pressure hence destroying the rock.
