1.2 - Beaches Flashcards
Chesil Beach
Shingle barrier beach
Marine transgression
15 metres high
Wave energy overrides longshore drift
Wave Fetch
The distance a wave travels, they pick up energy over distance.
Wave Height Decreases
Wave speed decreases as it gets closer to the shore as there is more friction with the seabed
Destructive Waves
Common in winter
Stronger backwash
Steeper beach
Smaller beach
Constructive Waves
Common in summer
Stronger swash
Gentler beach
LArger beach
Backwash
Sediment from the beach being taken back
Swash
Sedimnet from the sea taken towards
Perculation
Downward movement of water through a beach.
Shingle Beach - Constructive Waves
Beach will be relatively flat and big
Shingle Beach - Destructive Waves
Sediment dragged away, less material bought in and more lost however percolation reduces pwoer of backwash.
Sandy Beach - Constructive Waves
Larger swash, bringing material in, beach will be flat and beach will be bigger however less water percolates.
Sandy Beach Destructive Waves
Smaller beach, stronger backwash - no percolation
